Byron Evans served with the 4th regiment Company D Ohio Volunteer Infantry from April 20 1861 to February 21 1865 He was taken prisoner May 6 1864 in the Battle of the Wilderness and transferred to numerous prisons until he ended up at Charlotte, North Carolina.
He was shot through the left knee by a confederate guard and died February 21 1865 of amputation of the thigh
The letters were written to his Uncle T.W. Evans in Outville, Ohio. The letters were transcribed by family.
